First light, and this is the strongest time-of-day recommendation on any page in this section. The house reef is described as calmest and clearest early, with reef sharks patrolling before the wind builds and the water gets textured. Because access is from the beach rather than from a boat, that window is actually available to you rather than dependent on a schedule. Seasonally, the drier months from roughly April to November give the most settled conditions, though a sheltered shore reef is far less season-sensitive than the current-swept sites further into the park.

Long, shallow at the top and easy to reach. It is described as running about a kilometre along the island, with hard coral covering the shallows before sloping away, and fusiliers, surgeonfish, parrotfish, turtles and reef sharks as the regular cast. Several entry points run along the frontage, some usable only at mid-tide or above to avoid damaging coral. A common approach is a short boat ride to the far end followed by a drift back, roughly twenty to thirty-five minutes. Opinions on quality vary from outstanding to merely good, which is normal for any reef judged across different tides and hours.

It is one of the easiest options in the area for both. Water entry is from a beach rather than off a moving boat, the shallows are calm, and there is no schedule forcing anyone to be in the water at a particular time or for a particular length. That matters with children and with nervous swimmers, who can go in for ten minutes and come out. The offsetting point is isolation: there is one property on the island and nothing else, so everything you need has to be there or brought with you.

It depends where the boundary runs, and sources disagree. One national tourism listing places the resort inside Komodo National Park. The property’s own listing describes it as around a hundred metres outside the park border, and other listings describe the island as bordering the park. What is not in doubt is that the dive sites reached from here — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Karang Makassar and the rest — are inside the park, and park entry applies to those days. Ask the property or your operator which days of your stay carry park entry, in writing, before paying.

Yes, but you get a different place. A passing boat can stop for a snorkel on the house reef, and some itineraries include it between the near-port stops and central Komodo. What that buys is one session at whatever hour the schedule allows, which is the same deal every other stop offers. The reason people come to Sebayur specifically is the part a day boat cannot sell: walking into the reef at six in the morning with nobody else in the water. There is no public ferry, so either way you arrive by boat from Labuan Bajo.

Sebayur is two islands, Besar and Kecil, meaning large and small. The accommodation and the house reef are associated with Sebayur, with listings naming Sebayur Besar. Siaba is a separate pair of islands further into the park — Siaba Besar is the sheltered turtle bay nicknamed Turtle City, and it is a stop rather than a place to stay. The names rhyme, both come in a large and a small version, and both appear on dive-site lists, which is why they get swapped. If an itinerary mentions turtles and a check-out dive, that is Siaba Besar. If it mentions a beach you sleep on, that is Sebayur.

Geographically, yes. The island sits close to the central and northern sites — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Karang Makassar, the Cauldron and Golden Passage — and marketing for the island claims a substantially shorter run to them than from other resort bases, which is plausible from a map though not something we can verify independently. Rinca and Kalong are both reported at around forty-five to fifty minutes by boat. The honest limitation is that a shore base still cannot put you on a tide-critical site at first slack the way a boat sleeping in that anchorage can. For Batu Bolong specifically, that gap is real.

Published times disagree considerably, and the reason is the boat rather than the distance. A fast dive boat or resort transfer is quoted at around thirty to forty-five minutes; a slower vessel at up to about an hour and a half. Labuan Bajo itself sits a short drive from the airport, so the island is reachable within a couple of hours of landing on a good day. That proximity is what makes it viable as a base rather than an expedition, and it is also why the reef stays quiet: it is close enough to reach easily and far enough off the day-trip circuit that nobody stops.
