Tour Overview

A Komodo one day tour is a fourteen-hour day, not a half day. Labuan Bajo to Padar is around two hours by speedboat and four or more under sail, so a single-day itinerary means leaving at first light and returning after dark. Done well it covers three or four stops. Done badly it is a lot of transit for two photographs.

The half day version does not really exist inside the national park. Operators selling a Komodo half day tour are almost always running the near islands — Kelor, Menjerite, Kanawa, Sebayur — which sit within an hour of Labuan Bajo. Those are pleasant snorkelling stops and they are genuinely half a day, but there are no dragons and no Padar. If a half-day listing names Padar or Komodo Island, check the timings before you believe it.

What fits in a full day: Padar for the ridge climb, Pink Beach, one dragon island, and usually one snorkel stop. Rinca substitutes for Komodo Island on most day itineraries because it is nearer. Karang Makassar for the mantas is the stop that gets dropped, and on a speedboat schedule it rarely survives.

Park access is separate unless the operator states otherwise. Register each visitor and the confirmed visit plan through SiOra before departure, complete cashless payment in advance, and compare the full day-trip total using “What the Park Costs” rather than the boat headline alone.

If you can find one night, take it. The 2 day 1 night tour costs less per stop, puts you on Padar at sunrise instead of mid-morning, and removes the two longest transits from your waking hours. The 3 day 2 night version is where the mantas become reliable.

  • Policy detail

Terms are set by the operator, not by KomodoInsider. Full-day charters are booked closer in than overnight trips and the terms reflect that: a deposit at booking, the balance due a few days out, and a sliding forfeit inside roughly a week.

Weather is a bigger factor here than on any other Komodo itinerary. The Labuan Bajo to Padar crossing is the exposed part of the park, and a day trip has no ability to wait it out or reschedule around it — the whole product is that one crossing. Operators cancel or shorten day trips more often than overnight ones, and most will offer a reschedule or a partial refund rather than a full one.

Ask specifically what happens if Padar is dropped for sea state. On a charter that is the difference between a full day and an expensive boat ride to Pink Beach, and it is worth having the answer in writing before you pay.

  • Notes

The compared boats are private whole-vessel day charters. Confirm crew, fuel, meals, snorkeling equipment, guide and hotel transfers in the written quotation. Airport pickup is normally impractical for the early departure and must be confirmed separately. Diving, alcohol, gratuities and personal expenses are not assumed. Park entrance and activities are separate unless stated; arrange SiOra registration and cashless payment before departure, then see “What the Park Costs” for the current official schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Komodo one day tour worth it?

Worth it if one day is genuinely all you have. You will stand on Padar, swim at Pink Beach and see dragons, which is the headline set. What you will not get is the park at dawn or dusk, when it looks completely different and the boats thin out.

Not worth it as a way to save money. A day trip pays a full day of park fees for a few hours ashore, so per hour inside the park it is the most expensive option in Komodo. If a night is findable, the 2 day 1 night tour is better value on every measure except calendar days.

How long is a Komodo day trip?

Twelve to fourteen hours door to door. Hotel pickup runs from about 05:30, the boat leaves at first light, and you are back in Labuan Bajo somewhere between six and eight in the evening.

Most of the variance is the vessel. A speedboat reaches Padar in about two hours; a phinisi takes four or more, which is why phinisi day charters cover fewer stops or run later. Ask which type of boat the price refers to before comparing two quotes.

Is there a Komodo half day tour?

Not one that reaches the national park. Padar and Komodo Island are two hours out even by speedboat, so a genuine half day cannot include them and get you back.

What is sold as a half day is the near-island circuit: Kelor, Menjerite, Kanawa or Sebayur, all within an hour of Labuan Bajo. Good snorkelling and a decent morning, but no dragons and no Padar. If a half-day listing names either, check the departure and return times before booking.

Can you see Komodo dragons on a day trip?

Yes, almost always on Rinca rather than Komodo Island. Rinca is roughly an hour closer to Labuan Bajo, and that hour is what makes the rest of the itinerary possible.

The dragons are as reliable on Rinca, and the walk is arguably better — more open savannah, more chance of buffalo, deer and macaques. If you specifically want to have stood on Komodo Island, confirm which one the itinerary names.

How much is a Komodo day trip?

The matched private-charter fleet is priced dynamically: whole-boat rates currently run from

to

across

vessels. Final price depends on boat, capacity, date, route and inclusions. Shared-seat speedboat pricing is not claimed on this page. Park access is separate unless stated; see “What the Park Costs”.

Can I do a Komodo day trip from Bali?

Not in one day. The first flight from Denpasar lands in Labuan Bajo well after the day boats have left, and the last flight back leaves before they return. A Komodo day trip requires a night in Labuan Bajo on at least one side, usually both.

In practice a day trip from Bali is a three-day trip: fly in, overnight, day trip, overnight, fly out. At that point the 2 day 1 night tour uses the same calendar and puts you inside the park overnight. The Komodo tour from Bali page has the flight timings.

What time do you get back from a Komodo day trip?

Between six and eight in the evening, and later if the sea is up on the return crossing. Sunset happens while you are still on the water, which some people count as a bonus and others as a long day.

Do not book a flight out on the same evening. Return times are not guaranteed, the crossing from Padar is the exposed stretch, and a delayed arrival is common enough that operators will tell you not to risk it.

Speedboat or phinisi for a Komodo day trip?

Speedboat if you want the stops. It halves the transit, which on a fixed fourteen-hour day converts directly into more time ashore — typically four stops instead of three.

Phinisi if the boat is part of the day. Deck space, shade, a proper lunch and somewhere to lie down make the transit pleasant rather than something to endure, and for a group taking the whole vessel that trade often wins. It is slower, so expect one fewer stop or a later return.

What the Park Costs

What you payAmountBasis
Park entrance, foreign visitor Rp 250,000 ≈ $14 per person, per visit Identical on weekdays and public holidays. Already includes trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling inside the park.
Park entrance, Indonesian visitor, weekday Rp 50,000 ≈ $3 per person, per visit Raised from Rp 35,000 in October 2024.
Park entrance, Indonesian visitor, weekend or public holiday Rp 75,000 ≈ $4 per person, per visit The holiday uplift applies to the Indonesian rate only.
Park entrance, Indonesian student group Rp 25,000 ≈ $1 per person, per day Group bookings only.
Scuba diving permit Rp 25,000 ≈ $1 per diver, per day Charged on top of the entrance fee. Snorkelling is not charged separately.
Vessel entry varies Assessed on the engine capacity of the boat, so it is normally settled by the operator rather than by passengers.
  • Booking runs through SIORA, the park's own system, and is handled by a licensed operator before arrival. There is no ticket window at the gate.
  • A daily cap of 1,000 visitors applies across the park, split between Komodo, Rinca and Padar and the dive sites around them.
  • Entry runs in sessions rather than all day, which is why a boat's arrival time is set by the park and not by the crew.
  • A drone permit is separate, expensive, and has to be requested well in advance.

Statutory rates set by Peraturan Pemerintah No. 36 Tahun 2024, in force since 30 October 2024. Checked 25 August 2026. Amounts are payable in rupiah; dollar figures are converted at Rp 17,900 and rounded. A rise in the foreign rate was under government review in April 2026 and had not taken effect.

    Who This Suits

Right for you if you have exactly one day in Labuan Bajo and no way to add a night. That is the honest use case, and it is a common one: a layover between Flores overland travel and a flight, or a diving holiday with one non-diving day in it.

Groups of eight or more get the most from the boats listed here, because a full-day phinisi charter is priced per vessel. Split across sixteen people it becomes reasonable; split across two it does not. Photographers should note that a day trip reaches Padar mid-morning rather than at sunrise, which is the wrong light for the shot most people are chasing.

Think again if you are travelling with young children or anyone who tires easily. This is fourteen hours with two long transits, a forty-minute climb in the heat, and no cabin to retreat to. The 2 day 1 night tour spreads the same stops across two days and costs less per stop.

Think again too if the mantas or the sunrise matter. Neither survives a day schedule. Karang Makassar is the first casualty of the timetable, and Padar at dawn requires sleeping inside the park.

Not suitable for diving. A day itinerary has no room for a dive schedule and none of these charters sell one.
