Internet in Komodo and Labuan Bajo: What to Check Before You Go

Expect useful connectivity in Labuan Bajo and uncertain connectivity as the boat moves through Komodo National Park. Mobile coverage, a vessel’s onboard Wi-Fi and emergency radio are three different systems. A boat advertised with satellite internet may deliver guest messaging while still being unable to guarantee uninterrupted calls or an office work session. Before your Komodo trip, complete essential downloads and payments on land.
Reviewed 23 September 2026. No route-wide speed test or boat-specific Wi-Fi audit was available. Coverage changes with position, vessel equipment, terrain, weather and network load; confirm the operating boat for your date.
Break the route into connectivity zones
| Where | Reasonable planning assumption | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Labuan Bajo town | Mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi may be available, but check your device and plan | Activate a suitable SIM or roaming package; download confirmations. |
| Port and near-town sailing | Land network may still reach the boat, with interruptions | Complete bank and permit transactions before boarding. |
| Islands and channels | Signal can return near one shore and vanish behind another | Use saved maps and documents; do not promise contact at a fixed hour. |
| Remote anchorage | A cellular data connection cannot be assumed | Ask what the vessel itself offers and what the crew uses for emergencies. |
Telkomsel described coverage around populated Labuan Bajo and tourist sites in an older 2020 network announcement. It does not certify your 2026 data service at a particular anchorage. A 2026 check should use the provider’s current coverage tool, your device and a real departure’s operating boat.
“Wi-Fi on board” has several meanings
Ask whether the boat has its own cellular router, satellite connection, shore-only Wi-Fi or no guest service. Then ask whether the network works when sailing as well as at anchor, whether it has a data cap or time limit, how many guests share it, and what happens when power or hardware fails. One competitor markets satellite internet on its own boat; that is information about that vessel, not evidence that the whole Komodo fleet has satellite Wi-Fi.
Before booking a komodo tour 3 days 2 nights, obtain the actual boat name and Wi-Fi terms if connectivity is essential. The route and the cabin can be available even when a specific Wi-Fi-equipped vessel is not the one running your departure. If you need a video call for work, make it in Labuan Bajo or obtain an explicit contingency; do not turn “Wi-Fi available” into a meeting guarantee.
What to finish on land
- Install or activate the SIM/eSIM appropriate for your unlocked handset and itinerary; test a call and data before sailing.
- Download the park confirmation, vessel booking, flight tickets and operator contacts to an offline folder.
- Download offline maps of Labuan Bajo and your onward route; do not use a map app as a substitute for the crew’s navigation.
- Pay invoices that require a bank app or OTP before boarding; keep your own account secure.
- Tell a contact at home the operator, vessel, expected return time and what missed check-ins should mean.
Check our cash, cards and ATM guide for payments that may depend on connectivity. Keep a protected copy of your confirmation and enough device power to present it when asked; ask the operator whether a printout is helpful.

Emergency communication is a separate question
The boat should explain how it communicates when a guest’s phone has no signal, who initiates a response, and how it informs shore contacts. Do not assume guest satellite Wi-Fi substitutes for marine radio, working safety equipment or a practiced plan. Follow the crew’s instructions for incidents on the water. If the trip includes diving, ask the dive operator for its separate site and emergency briefing.

Ask this before relying on onboard internet
“Which boat will operate on [date]? Is guest internet provided by cellular, satellite or shore Wi-Fi? Does it work underway, is there a limit or charge, and can you share a recent coverage example from the planned route? What is the crew’s separate method of emergency communication if guest internet fails?”
A small test before you depend on an eSIM
An eSIM purchase alone is not a connectivity test. Before boarding, check that the phone supports the eSIM, that the plan’s Indonesian network is available in Labuan Bajo, and that mobile data and messaging work with the correct line selected. If your bank sends one-time codes to a home SIM, decide how you will receive them while roaming or finish payment on land. Do not place passwords, identity numbers or full payment-card images in an unprotected offline note.
Make a low-stakes connection plan with a contact at home: “I expect to be intermittently offline between [dates]; the boat’s emergency contact is [verified number]; call for help through the operator if [agreed condition].” A missed text during an island transfer should not automatically trigger an emergency, but someone should know the vessel and expected return. Save both the land-based contact and the crew’s method of reaching them.
Connectivity questions specific to each boat
- Is guest Wi-Fi included or paid, and is there a per-device cap?
- Does it work at anchor only, or underway as well?
- Can guests make voice calls, or only send messages?
- Is there a separate crew communications device if guest Wi-Fi fails?
- Who can contact family ashore if a schedule changes?
Two tests for the same Wi-Fi claim
A guest who only needs to message family can tolerate delays and outages; a guest required to attend a video call at 09:00 cannot. Ask the vessel about the second case specifically. A speed-test screenshot from another anchorage or a satellite brand name cannot guarantee your call at a particular time, especially when guest bandwidth is shared. Choose a land-based work block or a genuinely optional meeting rather than buying an unverified service promise.
If the boat says it uses a mobile router, ask which local network and whether it operates only within land-tower reach. If it says satellite, ask about current service, data limits, deck coverage and outages, without assuming the crew gives guests access to the emergency system. For either connection, device charging can be the bottleneck; confirm power availability and any nighttime generator schedule with the named boat.
Offline documents with privacy in mind
Save booking reference, visit confirmation and emergency numbers where you can open them without an internet login. Avoid sharing passport images in a public chat or carrying unprotected copies of payment cards. Agree with the operator how identity documents should be submitted and whether the park e-ticket can be presented as a local file or needs another format. Test access while your phone is in airplane mode before leaving town.
Short answers
Will my SIM work throughout Komodo National Park?
Do not plan on continuous service. Coverage may be present near a populated shore and absent on another leg of the same route.
Do all Komodo boats have Wi-Fi?
No fleet-wide entitlement exists. Verify the named boat and connection type.
Can I book park access once offshore?
Complete or confirm the reservation before departure. The official park site links to SiOra, and relying on sea coverage for the transaction is avoidable.
