    Komodo

    The Komodo season runs from Labuan Bajo, broadly May to October, on a seven night pattern that Alila publishes as a set itinerary and will also rebuild to order. The standard run takes in Sabolon, Gili Lawa Laut for the dolphins and mantas plus the sunset hike, Banta, Komodo Island itself with a ranger walk and Pink Beach, two days around Padar, and Batu Muncul for a beach barbecue. Minimum charter here is four nights, which is the cheapest way to get on board.

    Raja Ampat

    Raja Ampat runs from Sorong between November and April, usually as an eight day voyage. Kri and South Gam for the check dive and the headline diving, Wayag for the limestone karst, Waigeo with a pearl farm visit, Jeffam for kayaking through rock pools, and Mansuar for turtles and mantas plus a village visit. Minimum charter is five nights. This is where the boat spends the northern winter and where most of her repeat guests go.

    Cenderawasih Bay

    Cenderawasih Bay is the newest destination on her schedule and runs on request only, from Manokwari or Biak. The draw is whale sharks at the bagan fishing platforms, which behave differently here than anywhere else in Indonesia, plus scattered WWII wreckage from the Battle of Biak. Long transits, few other boats, and a trip that needs planning months ahead.

    Banda Sea

    The Maumere to Ambon crossing, or the reverse, is an eleven day and ten night run across the Flores Sea into the Banda Sea. Volcanic islands, deep walls and spice island history. It appears in some years and not others, and like Cenderawasih it is sold on request rather than as a published season.

    Who Alila Purnama suits

    Guests who want a hotel rather than a dive boat with beds. She is run by the Alila hotel group, and it shows in the things liveaboards usually get wrong: a spa therapist on staff, a library, an air-conditioned lounge and bar, and service standards set by a resort operator rather than a charter agent. Fourteen crew for ten guests.

    Two couples or a family who can take the whole boat. Five suites, ten guests maximum. That is small enough that the vessel never feels shared and large enough that the per-person figure is not absurd once the boat is full.

    Certified divers who want the diving handled. A fully accredited PADI dive centre, a professional dive instructor in the crew and a four-to-one guide ratio. Nitrox is available on board.

    Travellers going beyond the usual two regions. Alongside Komodo and Raja Ampat she runs Cenderawasih Bay for the whale sharks and the Banda and Spice Island route through Ambon and Maumere, which most vessels in this bracket do not attempt.

    Who it suits less well

    Solo travellers and couples booking one cabin. She is normally sold whole-vessel, and the rate does not fall for a smaller party. The per-person number on this page assumes ten guests aboard.

    Divers chasing tank counts. The programme is built around comfort and shore time as much as the dive deck. Four cabins are sixteen to seventeen square metres with portholes rather than windows, which is compact by superyacht standards.

    Anyone wanting to certify on board without arranging it first. Courses need to be booked in advance rather than decided on day two.

    Groups larger than ten. There is no eleventh berth, and no extra-bed option published.

    About This Vessel

    Alila Purnama is the only vessel in this fleet that comes from a hotel group rather than a private owner or a dive operator. She was launched in 2012, hand-built in South Sulawesi in the Bugis phinisi tradition, then fitted out to the standard Alila applies to its resorts. Hyatt has owned the Alila brand since 2018, and she is still sold through Alila reservations as well as through charter brokers. Purnama means full moon.

    At 46 metres over a 10 metre beam she is a large boat carrying very few people. Five suites, ten guests, a crew of fourteen, spread across three decks. That ratio is the entire proposition. The space that would be extra cabins on a dive-focused vessel of the same length is instead an air-conditioned lounge and dining room, a library with a screen, a bar, and oversized shaded daybeds on the main deck. Interiors are teak and rattan, and each suite is themed after an Indonesian kingdom.

    Diving runs from a licensed PADI centre on board, with nitrox at no charge, equipment for ten divers, a dedicated freshwater rinse tank for cameras and a four-to-one diver-to-guide ratio. Certified divers only unless you arrange a course in advance. A spa therapist sails with the boat, which is unusual at this size, and there are two speedboat tenders rather than one.

    The season splits cleanly. Komodo out of Labuan Bajo from roughly May to October, Raja Ampat out of Sorong from November to April, with Cenderawasih Bay, the Banda Sea and the Maumere to Ambon crossing available on request. Minimum charter is four nights in Komodo and five nights in Raja Ampat.

      Can I book a single cabin on Alila Purnama?

      Not as a rule. She is sold as a whole-vessel charter across all five suites, and the rate is the same whether you sail with four guests or ten. Occasional scheduled departures are sold by the cabin through dive agents, but they are not the standard way she trades and they sell out early.

      What is the minimum charter length?

      Four nights in Komodo and five nights in Raja Ampat. The Cenderawasih Bay and Banda Sea crossings are considerably longer, with the Maumere to Ambon run at ten nights.

      How much does it cost?

      Do I need to be a certified diver?

      Yes for the standard dive programme. The PADI centre on board can run courses from Open Water upwards, but that needs arranging before you sail rather than deciding on day two.       Is nitrox included?
