Komodo and the New7Wonders of Nature: What the Title Means

Understand Komodo’s New7Wonders of Nature recognition, the 2011 vote, 2013 celebrations and its separate UNESCO World Heritage status.

Komodo is one of the New7Wonders of Nature selected through the New7Wonders campaign associated with the 2011 public vote. The title is separate from Komodo National Park’s UNESCO World Heritage inscription, which dates to 1991. When both appear in a travel description, they refer to different forms of recognition.

For travellers, the distinction is useful rather than merely technical. It tells you why a destination name appears in a worldwide campaign, what UNESCO recognised, and which questions still belong to the practical planning of a park visit.

The quick answer: two recognitions, different histories

The organiser’s Komodo page identifies it as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. The UNESCO World Heritage entry records the separate inscription date and criteria. Use those pages to identify the recognition being discussed, rather than treating two logos in a brochure as the same award.

From the vote to the celebrations

WhenMilestoneHow to read it
11 November 2011The organiser’s website identifies the announcement of the provisional New7Wonders of Nature. This is the campaign announcement date, not Komodo’s UNESCO inscription.
11 September 2013New7Wonders documents the Komodo plaque presentation in Jakarta. An inauguration-related event in the capital.
September 2013Official inauguration celebrations are reported by the organiser in a post dated 14 September. The report and the earlier vote belong to different stages of the campaign.

The Jakarta plaque report records Bernard Weber presenting the plaque to Jusuf Kalla. The subsequent inauguration report describes attendance by Indonesia’s then-president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and other participants. These are historical roles in the 2013 event, rather than statements about who holds office today.

That sequence explains why an article may mention 2011 while a photograph or plaque ceremony is dated 2013. Keep the vote, an event announcement and a celebration date distinct when checking a historical claim.

What are the other New7Wonders of Nature?

The official campaign site lists these seven selected wonders. They include islands, a mountain, a river-and-forest region and other landscapes; the list does not describe seven interchangeable kinds of destination.

What UNESCO recognised in Komodo

UNESCO’s entry describes a protected landscape with major islands, coastal and marine habitats, and the Komodo dragon. Its natural criteria cover exceptional scenery and the conservation of biodiversity. The record gives a broader context than a single dragon photograph: land, coast and sea are connected parts of the property.

The entry is a heritage record, not a live inventory of what a visitor will see next week. Historical figures or descriptions on an international listing should not be turned into present-day wildlife guarantees. Use current, dated evidence for questions such as animal numbers, visitor arrangements and temporary restrictions.

Komodo Island, the national park and Labuan Bajo

These names often sit together in travel marketing, but they help with different planning questions. Komodo Island is an island destination. Komodo National Park is the wider protected-area context. Labuan Bajo is the gateway town where many visitors arrange their transport and boat departure.

Our Komodo National Park guide introduces the destination, while the islands and route guide helps distinguish individual stops. A campaign title cannot tell you whether a particular boat visits Komodo Island, Rinca, Padar or a different combination.

What the title changes for your trip planning

Use the recognition as a reason to learn about the place, then choose the trip on its actual contents. Ask which islands are named, how activities are guided, how much time is spent aboard and what happens if a stop changes. The same destination title can appear above very different travel experiences.

  • For dragon watching: identify the named land visit and guiding arrangements.
  • For landscapes: compare the actual viewpoint walk and the group’s available time.
  • For the marine environment: distinguish a scenic cruise, snorkelling and diving before booking.
  • For the complete cost: check the departure-specific inclusions and park arrangements.

Compare Komodo tour formats after choosing your priorities. A route that fits your pace and interests is more useful than a broad claim to cover a famous wonder.
