About This Place
Crystal Rock is a northern Komodo pinnacle that rises to the surface at low water and can disappear beneath it as the tide changes. It sits close to Castle Rock, but its shallow crown, coral-covered slopes and multiple shoulders create a different dive rather than a duplicate stop.
Clear water is common enough to explain the name. Anthias and fusiliers move over the reef, while trevally, surgeonfish, sweetlips and larger predators gather where the current meets the rock. Whitetip and grey reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, turtles and rays are reported, although the strongest photographic subject is often the dense reef life itself.
Crystal Rock remains an exposed site. Current can run along or across the pinnacle and may shift within a dive. The best route is decided from the tide and surface check, with the lee side used for shelter and the shallow crown reserved for a controlled finish.

What to Expect
A quick descent normally puts the group on the protected shoulder before the current can carry divers away from the rock. From there, the guide can work toward the current-facing point for schooling fish, then return through calmer water.
The shallow crown supports hard coral and clouds of small reef fish. Deeper ledges can hold sweetlips, snappers, morays and nudibranchs; the blue-water edge is where sharks, tuna or eagle rays may pass. Visibility often reaches 15–30 metres but is never fixed.
Because the top can break the surface at low tide, wave action and boat positioning also matter. The skipper follows divers rather than relying on a fixed mooring.
Crowds and Timing
Crystal Rock shares the same northern tide windows as Castle Rock, so dive tenders can converge in the morning. A responsible guide spaces the entry from other groups and uses a different shoulder when possible. The reef feels far less crowded once teams separate around the pinnacle.

How to Visit
Book it through an established Komodo dive centre or liveaboard. Day boats leave Labuan Bajo early; liveaboards often anchor near Gili Lawa and can reach the site before long-distance day boats. Final access depends on tide, swell and diver ability, so treat the site as a conditional itinerary stop.

Safety Notes
Current direction can change around the rock, producing acceleration on points and eddies behind them. Stay on the agreed side, monitor depth and gas more often than on a static reef, and deploy a surface marker for a blue-water ascent.
Do not stand or grip living coral on the shallow crown. If surface chop, current or group skill makes the plan marginal, the correct decision is to use another site.
Photography Notes
A fisheye or wide rectilinear lens captures the coral crown and fish schools. Use enough shutter speed to freeze anthias and trevally, and watch the blue behind the reef for silhouettes. Macro opportunities exist, but photographers must stay with the guide and keep equipment compact for the entry and current.

- SiOra is the park’s e-ticketing and SIMAKSI system. Reserve before travel; Ministry guidance recommends completing the reservation by H-1. An operator can assist, and self-service is available at the Komodo Visitor Center and KP3 terminal.
- Payment is cashless through the methods available in SiOra, including BRIVA or bank transfer and supported e-wallets. Keep the e-ticket and ensure the traveller details are correct.
- A 1,000-visitor daily quota has applied since 1 April 2026 to the main visitor islands and 23 dive sites. Availability therefore depends on the travel date and registered itinerary.
- The final SiOra total can include entrance, activity, vessel and special-use charges. Ask the handling operator for an itemised total before issuance.
- Official public guidance does not state one universal refund or rescheduling rule for every reservation. Confirm the current SiOra terms in writing before the ticket is issued, including treatment of weather disruption.
