Komodo Islands & Landmarks: Where to Go

Flying a Drone in Komodo: Permissions and Restrictions to Verify

Traveler discussing drone permissions with crew on the deck of Aliikai Voyage

Can you fly a drone in Komodo National Park? Only after checking and obtaining the permissions required for the aircraft, pilot, airspace and activity. The park publishes a specific application process for small unmanned aircraft used for personal or commercial tourism documentation. Booking a Komodo island trip, renting a drone or arranging a private boat charter does not itself provide a flight permit. Some areas remain prohibited even if an operator says they often see drones there.

Official park page checked 23 September 2026. The actual approval, dates, locations, fee and airspace conditions must be confirmed in writing for each flight plan.

There is more than one approval question

LayerWhat to verify
Aircraft and pilotThe registration and pilot documentation required by Indonesia’s aviation authorities for the proposed aircraft and operation.
Airspace and flight planThe relevant aviation permission and safety assessment for the intended location, date and flight path.
National parkBalai Taman Nasional Komodo’s permission for the proposed operation within the conservation area.
Tour and boatWhether the captain can safely accommodate the activity and whether the itinerary reaches the approved location at the approved time.

The park’s published document list includes an application letter, flight plan, safety-assessment recommendation from the air-navigation provider, aircraft registration, pilot license, aviation flight permission, insurance document and stamp duty. Read the park page for the precise current list and send questions to the park before you pay for an aerial-focused itinerary. The page says complete documents may be submitted by email or in person no later than three working days before the activity. That is a submission limit, not a guarantee of approval within three days.

Specific places the park flags as prohibited

The park explicitly prohibits small unmanned aircraft over Pulau Kalong near Rinca, at the Loh Buaya and Loh Liang visitor resort areas, and over its core zone. It cites disturbance to flying foxes and sensitive birds, as well as protection of core dragon habitat. Do not reinterpret “the drone takes off from a boat” as permission to cross a protected area in the air. Ask the park to verify your exact coordinates and route; a generic map label is insufficient.

Other aviation and conservation restrictions may also apply to a location. Do not assume that a shoreline outside one named no-fly point is automatically approved. Conditions in an issued permission control what the operator can actually do.

Budget and timeline without an invented universal fee

Various travel pages quote a flat drone charge, but a fee example is not a complete current approval checklist. The park’s application page sets out documents and locations but does not itself show a complete payable total for every case. Ask the park or official payment channel for the current government charge, the unit of assessment and whether a separate aviation application has a charge. Do not book a date-sensitive boat solely on an old blog estimate.

  1. Define personal or commercial purpose and the exact proposed flight locations.
  2. Check the aircraft and pilot documentation with the relevant aviation authority.
  3. Prepare the flight plan and required supporting documents.
  4. Submit the park application within its stated time requirements and wait for written instructions.
  5. Only then align a vessel and date with the permitted area and final approval.

What to tell a boat operator

Ask whether the captain allows the launch or recovery from that particular vessel, who holds the park permission, what would happen if the approved site is unsafe or the route changes, and whether your insurance covers the operation. A komodo private charter may offer control over the itinerary, but it does not override the park’s prohibited areas or aviation rules. A paid photographer accompanying a tour may still need the appropriate permit.

Questions travelers often miss

Can I fly at Kalong Island for the bats?

The park page specifically prohibits drone operation over Kalong near Rinca and its waters. Plan a non-drone observation from the approved boat location.

Can a guide approve a spontaneous flight?

A guide’s verbal permission is not a substitute for the documented aviation and park permissions. Show the approved flight plan to the operator before departure.

Does an approved permit guarantee the boat can stop?

No. The captain still evaluates sea and vessel conditions. Discuss a changed itinerary with the authority and operator rather than moving the flight unilaterally.

Check the broader Komodo National Park guide before applying, because route access and visitor procedures can change alongside flight permissions.

Request approval for a defined operation

Specify the place, intended dates, purpose, aircraft, pilot and planned operation when asking the relevant authority. An operator’s willingness to carry a drone is not a park or aviation approval. Keep the actual permission and its limits together with the booking, including any restriction on takeoff or wildlife disturbance.

If a site or date changes, ask whether the original approval still applies. Do not infer authorisation from another guest flying, a social-media clip or the absence of a sign. When permission cannot be confirmed, keep the aircraft packed and use a permitted ground or boat photograph.

Does a boat operator’s approval replace park permission?

No. Confirm the approvals and operating limits applicable to the exact flight, place and purpose.

The protected-area context and map resources are available from UNESCO’s Komodo National Park record; this is not a current permit or trail-access document.
