About This Place
Manta Alley is a group of rocks and reef at Loh Belanda near the southern tip of Komodo Island. It receives cooler, plankton-rich water from the south, creating feeding and cleaning opportunities for reef manta rays.
Mantas may circle a cleaning station, cruise along the reef or feed near the surface. The same site also supports coral fish, reef sharks and turtles, so a visit remains a real dive when no manta arrives. Visibility can fall when plankton rises; that murkier water may be exactly what draws feeding rays.
The site is exposed and current can be strong. Its distance from Labuan Bajo and sensitivity to southern sea conditions make Manta Alley primarily a liveaboard destination. An operator should present it as a possible natural encounter, never a guaranteed performance.

What to Expect
Entries are planned up-current of the reef and adjusted to the active cleaning or feeding area. Divers settle beside the station, hold position without touching coral and leave a clear approach corridor.
Useful depth ranges from roughly 5 to 25 metres, with deeper terrain beyond. Mantas often pass above rather than beside the group, while surface feeding may be visible between dives.
The exit can be a drifting ascent in open water, so the tender must follow the team and every group needs a surface marker.
Crowds and Timing
When manta reports are good, several liveaboards may visit the same rocks. Too many divers around one station alter the encounter. Guides should stagger entry, keep teams to one side and move away when another group is already occupying the best position.

How to Visit
Choose a liveaboard that explicitly operates in south Komodo and has enough itinerary flexibility to wait for safe conditions. The south is often most accessible from about October through May. The captain may omit Manta Alley when swell, wind or current would make tender operation unsafe.

Who This Suits
For Advanced divers with current experience and calm open-water ascents. Confident snorkelers may be allowed near surface-feeding mantas only when the crew provides close tender support. It suits wildlife observers who accept variable visibility and no sighting guarantee.
What to Bring
- Advanced certification and recent drift-dive experience
- Dive computer and delayed surface marker buoy
- Exposure protection for cooler southern water
- Wide-angle camera with secure attachments
- Reef-safe sun protection and a dry layer for tender rides
Safety Notes
Current, swell, open-water separation and remote pickup are the main risks. Carry a delayed surface marker buoy, stay with the guide and follow the tender plan.
Never touch, feed, block or chase a manta. Keep clear of the cleaning station and other groups. If surface conditions deteriorate, end the activity promptly rather than trying to extend an encounter.
Read Komodo Diving Currents and Best Dive Sites in Komodo before agreeing the site with your dive team.
Photography Notes
A wide-angle lens is the right tool. Set exposure and strobe position before a ray arrives, remain low and let the manta choose the distance. Avoid swimming after a departing animal; patient divers often receive a closer second pass than photographers who chase the first one.
Entrance Fee
This site is inside Komodo National Park. Statutory park, activity and vessel charges may apply and can be separate from the operator fare. Ask the operator to itemise the current charges before payment; conditions and permitted activities are confirmed through the park and operator process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Manta Alley?
It is at Loh Belanda near the southern tip of Komodo Island inside Komodo National Park.
Are manta rays guaranteed?
No. It is a recognised cleaning and feeding area, but mantas are wild and may be absent during a particular tide or visit.
How deep is the dive?
Most manta-focused profiles use roughly 5–25 metres, with the guide choosing depth from current and animal activity.
Why can visibility be low?
Southern upwelling carries plankton. It can reduce clarity while creating the food conditions that attract feeding mantas.
What certification is appropriate?
Advanced certification plus current experience is a sensible minimum because the site is exposed and exits may be in open water.
Can snorkelers visit Manta Alley?
Sometimes, when mantas are near the surface and the captain judges current and swell safe. A crewed tender must remain close.
When is south Komodo most practical?
Many liveaboards plan southern routes between roughly October and May, but weather and sea state decide access on the day.
How is Manta Alley different from Mawan?
Manta Alley is a remote, exposed southern site with cooler water. Mawan is in central Komodo and is easier to combine with day-boat routes.
