Komodo runs from June to August out of Labuan Bajo, typically as a six-night round trip with around fourteen dives. It opens with a check dive at Pulau Sabayor Mini Wall, then works the northern pinnacles at Crystal Rock and Castle Rock, the reefs at Batu Bolong, the manta cleaning stations at Makassar Reef and Manta Alley, and a Lighthouse night dive. Land time includes the sunset trek at Gili Lawa Darat, with snorkelling laid on for non-divers in the mornings.
Raja Ampat is the wet-season half of the calendar, sailing from Sorong. The Dampier Strait sites carry the central legs, with the karst scenery of the north on longer routes. This is where the digital lounge earns its place: the biodiversity that draws photographers here is exactly the kind that needs a desk and a rinse tank at the end of the day.
Banda runs through October and November out of Ambon, the crossing season between Komodo and Raja Ampat. Deep walls, volcanic slopes at Gunung Api, pelagic action and the hammerhead aggregations the region is known for, plus the Spice Islands history ashore. Long open-water passages, which is what the twin-engine, long-range setup exists for.
Alor sits in September, a single month between the Komodo and Banda seasons, sailing from Kalabahi. Clear water, strong currents through the straits, macro subjects and pelagics in the same trip, and cultural visits ashore. It is the shortest window on the calendar, so dates go early.
Ambon is the departure port for the Banda Sea itineraries, and the bay diving is muck rather than reef. Silt, rubble and sponge, worked slowly and shallow. This is the ground the below-deck digital lounge was built for: three to four dives a day from two tenders produces a lot of files, and a naturalist guide aboard is more useful on critter sites than on reef.
Suits: underwater photographers above all. A dedicated digital lounge with a working desk, a camera rinse tank separate from the gear tank, individual gear stations and DIN adaptors add up to a boat that has thought about what happens after the dive, not just during it. Divers wanting range are also well served: four regions across the year and a twin-engine, long-distance setup to reach them.
Also works for: families. The two Master cabins connect through a private door, and each Deluxe cabin carries a single bunk above the double, so a child does not need a room of their own.
Less suited to: beginners and non-divers. Twenty logged dives is a hard minimum, so a newly certified diver cannot join at all. The two Standard cabins also use a wet-head bathroom, where the shower, toilet and basin share one space, which is worth knowing before booking the entry grade.
Amaya Explorer is a 35-metre Indonesian phinisi built for expedition diving across Komodo, Alor, the Banda Sea and Raja Ampat. Eight air-conditioned ensuite cabins accommodate a maximum of 16 guests, supported by 18 crew members, four dive guides and two 40 hp tenders.
The cabin inventory is exact: two Arun main cabins on the upper deck, four Anila deluxe cabins on the lower deck and two Ambar standard cabins on the lower deck. Arun cabins have queen beds, sea views and bathrooms with separate wet and dry areas. Anila cabins combine a double lower bed with a single upper bunk. Ambar cabins have two single bunks and a private wet-head bathroom. Every cabin has air-conditioning, hot and cold water and a private bathroom.
Diving is the core program, with three to four dives a day and a maximum ratio of four guests per guide. The boat has a Bauer compressor, DIN/INT-compatible tanks, a dedicated camera rinse area and a digital lounge for underwater photographers. Nitrox is available at extra cost. Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling and shore excursions are also offered.
The operator's current 2026 schedule lists a six-day, five-night Komodo departure on 31 August. Its 15% promotion reduces the Ambar rate from $2,400 to $2,040 per person, the lowest amount currently bookable for the minimum scheduled trip. Longer crossings and seven-night regional trips are priced separately.
Two upper-deck sea-view main cabins, each for two guests, with a queen bed, air-conditioning and a private ensuite with separate wet and dry areas. The two Arun cabins can connect for a family.
